6 Tips to Maximize Truck Bed Storage

It can be tempting to toss everything in the back of your truck bed and take off to the next job, adventure or activity, but it’s important to take the extra minute (or 15) and load things in properly. Beyond simple convenience and organization, there’s a crucial aspect that often goes overlooked – safety.

An improperly loaded or overweight truck bed can damage your truck, specifically leaf springs, center bolts, and rear suspension. It’s hard on your axles and tires and can result in costly repairs and damage to not only your truck, but your cargo, too.
You can create hazards by overloading your truck bed if you don’t properly secure items and they fly out into the road where another driver might hit them.
Cargo can move around in transit, so upon opening the tailgate you can be struck by items that have shifted.
Having a disorganized truck bed will ultimately slow you down since you never know where your items are.

We’ve rounded up some tips and tricks to help you maximize your truck bed storage, not only to keep your gear neatly arranged but also to ensure the security of your cargo and passengers. Once you’ve implemented these quick and easy solutions, you’ll be on the road in no time with a more organized — and safer — truck.

1. Clean Out the Bed

Let’s start simple – clean up your bed! It’s amazing what can accumulate in a truck bed. Aside from tools, equipment, gear, and cargo piling up back there, you’ve also got dirt, leaves, twigs, and other road debris to contend with.

Give it a good thorough cleaning by detaching the tailgate, removing the bed liner (if you have one) and then undergoing a rinse-wash-rinse cycle. Use a gentle car washing soap, and if pressurized water isn’t enough to remove the grime, consider employing the use of a mop or push broom. Finishing with a wax or coating can help further protect your bed from the elements and wear and tear.

2. Address Problem Areas

Remember, maximizing storage space in your truck bed isn’t just about using the right accessories; it’s also about maintaining the space effectively. It’s inevitable that your truck bed will get some nicks and scratches over the years. (It’s part of owning a truck, after all.) But if you don’t have a bed liner, bed mat, or other protection, then your paint can chip away and rust can settle in. Extreme weather and general exposure can lead to corrosion as well, compromising the structural integrity of your truck bed, and lead to pitting, flaking, or discoloration. So, in addition to regular cleanings, you’ll want to periodically inspect for damage and address problem areas pronto.

Surface rust can often be easily removed with treatments and coatings, but it’s important to catch it early or you’ll be looking into welded patch repairs. Similarly, ensure your truck bed has proper drainage channels and that they’re free of debris to prevent water from pooling.

3. Properly Load Your Cargo

Properly loading cargo in your truck bed is essential for safety, efficiency, and the longevity of your truck. It’s also the most straightforward (and cost-effective) way to maximize storage space.

Before loading down your truck bed, know the specific weight limits for your make and model. Distribute the weight of your cargo evenly across the truck bed, and place heavy items as close to the front of the bed (near the cab) as possible. To ensure your cargo doesn’t shift during transit, use properly-rated tie-downs, straps, and cargo nets. And if you’re hauling sand, gravel, rocks, leaves, or anything else that can easily fly out of the bed, make sure to use a tarp or some sort of cover to keep it put.

4. Pick Up a Toolbox

If you’re a professional or just a DIYer who needs to carry tools regularly, a truck bed toolbox can be a valuable addition. In addition to maximizing your storage space by providing a structured way to store your stuff, it keeps your equipment in order and offers protection from the elements. 5. Think Vertically

Truck bed organizers, like ladder racks, cab guards, and overlanding racks, greatly maximize bed space by creating dedicated storage and tie-down spaces for various items, making it easier to access what you need. Many of them sit above the truck bed, allowing you to carry longer or bulkier items like ladders, kayaks, or building materials without sacrificing valuable bed space.

6. Install a Tonneau Cover

Tonneau covers not only protect your cargo from bad weather and prying eyes, but also provide a secure and concealed storage space. While some covers – like retractable tonneaus – take up some valuable space at the top of the truck bed, other styles sit flush with or directly on top of the bed rails, leaving the entire bed space free and clear for covered storage. Plus, many tonneau covers can be customized with additional features, such as integrated storage pockets, toolboxes, or sliding trays, allowing for additional organized storage.
