Meet the 2023 Jeep Lineup

Learn what’s new on Jeep’s menu for the 2023 model year.

With the recent launch of several new and majorly redesigned offerings in the rear-view mirror, the Jeep brand continues to push into new markets for 2023. It could no doubt have rested on the popularity that the fourth-gen JL Wrangler continues to garner. Simply throw us a new trim or two and call it a day. But each new year, Jeep throws us something a bit unique and unexpected. It’s not just for the sake of change, but rather a needed move to stay a step ahead.

With other brands hot on its tail offering stellar off-roaders, Jeep understands its position as the pace setter in this category. Markets change, challengers arise, and outside forces loom large in the automotive future. Jeep’s 2023 lineup aims to combat these issues and stay prepared for what the off-road icon is sure to face in the coming years.

Let’s take a look at some of the more prominent additions to the 2023 model year lineup.

Grand Cherokee 4xe

Whether you’re for it, against it, or somewhere in between, the future of the automobile is electric. This future doesn’t exclude the off-roader either. Sitting right beside the popular Wrangler 4xe for the 2023 model year will be the electrified Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe as well.

If you have an aversion to all-electric vehicles, fear not, as the Grand Cherokee 4xe (like the Wrangler) is a plug-in hybrid, so it has a gas tank. In fact, the battery of the 4xe only holds enough charge for 25 miles of all-electric range. This may not sound like a ton, but with this addition, the EPA rates the Grand Cherokee at 56 mpg-e with a full charge.

Aside from a nice bump in torque, the 4xe achieves performance numbers not too dissimilar to those coming from the V8. And overall, the 4xe’s style and appointments are similar to its gas counterpart.

Jeep loves its numerous trim levels, and the 4xe comes out of the gate with five variants. The most surprising of these is the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. It’s surprising not because it’s available on a 4xe, but because for 2023 it’s only available on a 4xe.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk fords water, blasts through sand, and crawls rocky terrain.
That’s right, if you’re looking for a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, it will have to be a hybrid in 2023.

This Trailhawk will make for a unique off roading experience as your low-speed crawling can exclusively be done through the electric battery. This makes sense — gas to get to the trail and battery while on it.

Plus, with the niceties you’d expect on a Jeep off-road trim, like limited-slip differential, all-terrain tires, a low-range transfer case, and the capability to ford up to 2-feet of water, this Trailhawk is no slouch.

Pricing for a 4xe starts at around $62K for the base Limited, with the Trailhawk coming in closer to $70K. For the top trim Summit Reserve 4xe, expect to shell out $80K.

Wagoneer L/Grand Wagoneer L

Delving back through our last year of posts here at The Engine Block, we noticed that we really didn’t give the reanimated Jeep Wagoneer line a proper introduction for its 2022 launch year. For those that are wondering what a 30-year gap in production gave us — it’s bulk, beauty, and opulence.

While the Grand Cherokee has been properly whipped with the luxury stick over the past decade, the latest Wagoneer is a jock that grew up in the Hamptons. Mixing it up with the large SUV offerings from Cadillac, Lincoln, and Lexus — among others — the Wagoneer can tow 10,000 lbs., pushes out 400 ponies, and with its air suspension, can boast up to 10 inches of ground clearance. The Grand Wagoneer adds 80 HP and a 0-60 time of just 6.0 seconds, which is amazing for a vehicle tipping the scales at 6,340 lbs.

Both interiors are gorgeous in that rugged sense — like a massive, artisan-built log cabin in the woods. Pricing starts at $60K and $90K respectively, but can top out at well over $100K.

The L Word

So, that’s the story of the Wagoneer’s 2022 introduction, but new for this year is the “L” model for each of them. Whether it’s long, length, leviathan, or land-yacht that “L” adds even more mass to this already lively linebacker.

This comes in the form of seven additional inches of wheelbase and a foot of added overall length. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect is the new Hurricane I-6 twin-turbo engine for the entire Wagoneer platform– a departure from the V8. This comes in two flavors: a 420 or 510 HP variant. With the 510 HP version reaching 60 MPH in a bonkers sub 5.0 seconds…for a 6,700 lb. SUV.

The long-wheelbase 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are new for 2023 – as is the sleek, blacked out Carbide trim (top left).

But a larger question is why? Isn’t the non-“L” Wagoneer big enough? According to Jeep, no.

About 30% of the luxury full-size SUV market is large families who need the third-row and the extra space. This will put Jeep squarely in the same market that Chevy and Ford have dominated with the long versions of their Tahoe and Expedition.

If you’re interested, expect to dish out $80K+ for the Wagoneer L and $100K+ for a decently equipped Grand Wagoneer L.

Freedom Edition Wrangler and Gladiator

2023 Freedom Edition Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator

It’s no secret the Jeep brand is steeped in the military and American Armed Forces.

Way back in 1940, on the eve of World War II, the US Army was looking for a 1/4-ton “light reconnaissance vehicle” built to their specifications. Within the year, a blueprint was formulated and Willys delivered the Quad — referencing the 4×4 system it possessed.

And so began the military’s relationship with what came to be known as the Jeep. From its original duty to civilian garages the world over, Jeep embodies freedom.

For 2023, Jeep aims to pay tribute to all those past, present, and future who serve in the United States Armed Forces with its new trim level on the Wrangler and Gladiator — the Freedom Edition. You’ve certainly seen wild aftermarket military-themed Jeeps for decades. But Jeep has gone with a subtle, tasteful approach when designing the Freedom Edition.

  • Front Fender Decals and a Rear Oscar Mike Badging
  • Steel Bumpers and Rock Rails

Most importantly, Jeep will donate $250 to military charities for each Freedom Edition purchase.  Wrangler models will start just under $38K and Gladiators at $48K.

No matter the year, make, or model, there’s one company that’s stood out in the saturated world of Jeep accessories: N-FAB.

Sure, you can go on Amazon, eBay, or Wish and find yourself a dirt cheap set of rock rails, bumpers, or lights. But ask anyone who’s gone that route and they’ll tell you they won’t do it again. Poor tolerances in manufacturing create an installation nightmare. And if you’re lucky enough to get your parts to fit, would you really trust them to protect your vehicle in high leverage situations?

Your Jeep is an investment. And just like you wouldn’t pay some shady guy in a pop-up tent to do your dental work, don’t trust fly-by-night vendors and companies you can’t pronounce to outfit your Jeep.

N-FAB has been providing high-quality nerf bars, pre-runners, and off-road accessories to the enthusiast and professional since the 1980s. When it comes to tubular, N-FAB is the king. The brand’s high-tech engineering is able to produce some of the best-looking aftermarket metal you can buy.

But these guys know the trail doesn’t care about appealing, modern design. That’s why, they build their products with thick .084-gauge steel for maximum durability and protection. In fact, N-FAB products are built to function better and last longer than any competitor on the market.

N-FAB also has Jeep step systems or rails to suit any need or style. Whether you want a high, tight, and sleek design, or large, sturdy step plates for maximum sure-footedness, N-FAB has a product for you. As an owner myself of an N-FAB Rock Rail and RKR Step System, I can tell you I wouldn’t trust my off-roader to any other brand. Don’t ruin your Jeep with cheap imitations, go with N-FAB.

We are fans of Jeep and love the new lineups. Price will hold buyers back, but getting into the EV market is a good move. Like the blue accents to differentiate! Merry Christmas! Maybe I’ll see you at an auto show someday.
