Competition Corner: August 2022 Auto Events Round Out Summer
If it’s not coming down from the sun, it’d better be radiating off a gnarly engine. The heat of summer is on, and we’ve got a few more weeks to really soak it up. The good news for you is that there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate automotive goodness. There is a ton going on this August and not a minute to spare. Let’s jump right into it.
Ultra4 Racing: The Black Hills Throwdown
Sturgis, SD, is once again getting blown out of the water. Yes, Bike Week is going on, but that’s not what we’re talking about. August 5-7, Ultra4 is back for the Progressive Black Hills Throwdown. We’re talking about the baddest machines on the planet tearing it up in the name of victory. You’re not going to want to miss out. And when it’s done, you still have a few days to check out some sweet motorcycles in the same town.
Carlisle Events
Carlisle Events doesn’t sleep this time of year, and that’s why we’re staring down a twofer. First up is the Carlisle Truck Nationals, that’s running August 5-7. After that, Corvettes at Carlisle closes out the month on August 25-27. If you’ve got vehicles that qualify for either of these shows, you’d better make it down to the Carlisle fairgrounds. Otherwise, you might never forgive yourself for missing out.
BITD: 2022 Vegas to Reno
It’s the BITD Vegas to Reno race. What more can I say? This is a brutal 500-mile desert race that puts the best in the business to the test. Whether you dig ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, cars, or trucks in desert racing, this is the point-to-point race for you. It’s set to run August 10-13, so you can expect to have sand in your drawers for at least month after that.

Tri-Five Nationals
Depending on who you ask, the first cited muscle car can be a lot of things. But nobody can deny the 56-57 Chevy lineup as being one of the most important to enter the segment. If that’s your flavor of speed, Bowling Green, KY, has your name all over it August 11-13. The Tri-Five Nationals brings in countless of your favorite cars for a show, race, and swap meet like you wouldn’t believe. So, what are you waiting for?
Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival
No, the West Coast doesn’t get all the fun when it comes to heading off-grid. Here in Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival is running August 11-14. This event takes place on a 220-acre working farm just south of State College. (Good news for you Penn State fans.)
Whether you’re looking to get some practice in on courses, learn a few new tricks, or just want to spend time in the great outdoors with your loved ones, there’s no better place to be. Plus, the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival is timed every year for the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower during the 2nd week of August, so attendees can take every advantage of the long summer days and starry night skies.
Cal4Wheel 55th Sierra Trek
If you do happen to be on the West Coast and an off-road-bug bites you in the you-know-what during that same second week in August, you’re still in luck. August 11-14, the Cal4Wheel 55th Sierra Trek hits Meadow Lake in Truckee, CA. Whether you’re looking to push your lifted rig and skills to the limit or enjoy some wheeling and family fun, this is the perfect destination. Either way, you’ll get the sites your heart desires, the wheeling you’ve been dying for, and some fresh air. What more could you ask for?
NHRA

Much like last month, NHRA has a busy schedule for August. First up is the Menards NHRA Nationals August 12-14 at the Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, KS. Affectionally dubbed the House of Speed, this track is well-known for delivering record-breaking excitement.
Before the dust even settles, racers will move on to the Brainerd International Raceway for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals August 18-21. In addition to serving up thrilling racing action, this stop has some of the best camping on the NHRA tour.
Then, rounding out the month, August 31 – September 6, is the event that racers and fans have been waiting for all season. As the biggest, longest, and most historic event on the calendar, the Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals sees the best-of-the-best battle it out for bragging rights at the legendary Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Mecum Auctions – Monterey 2022
You got to take a rain check sometime, right? Why not plan one for August 18-20. That’s right about the time Mecum hits the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa. I mean, you could head out to check it out in person if you want, but there’s really nothing better than tuning in from your couch on a lazy day. You already know it’s going to be a good one, too, as last year’s Monterey auction was Mecum’s most successful daytime auction to date, and there are a ton of priceless classics, supercars, European classics, and more set to hit the block.
Woodward Dream Cruise
There are a lot of events hotrodders will add to the bucket list. Regardless of their favorite make and model, Woodward Dream Cruise is the most common entry. It’s the world’s largest one-day auto event and brings in millions of people and tens of thousands of cars. It doesn’t matter what you love, as long as you want to put on the miles right where it all started. If you’re interested, clear your schedule for August 20th, and head out to Detroit.

71st Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
You enjoy the finer things in life; that can be seen by your taste in cars. So why waste your time at just any car show? In Monterey, CA, at the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance celebrates 71 years of automotive excellence on Sunday, August 21. Experience priceless automobiles in their best element – backdropped by some of the most stunning vistas in America. Plus, this year offers a little extra excitement, as the DeLorean Motor Company will offer the first public look at its Alpha5 electric vehicle. You have no excuse to miss out.
10th Annual Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Club Invasion
Who doesn’t love a good Jeep expo? How about one set in the Smoky Mountains with direct access to over 800 miles of breathtaking trails, multiple historic sites, loads of wildlife, and a mere stone’s throw away from hundreds of stores? You’re sold, right? Right. So, pack your bags and head out to good ol’ Pigeon Forge, TN for the 10th Annual Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Club Invasion, running August 25-27. This event is family-friendly and welcoming to Jeepers of all levels – making it a great occasion to plan a vacation around.
NMCA All-American Nationals
What’s not to love about NMCA’s All-American Nationals? This is what real drag racing is all about, as it gives the best of the best down-home red-blooded racers of downtown USA a chance to take home the trophy. Whether you’re ready to prove you’re the real McCoy or are just ready to watch it all go down and check out a killer car and truck show in the meantime, you’d better be headed to Norwalk, OH, on August 25-28.

Overland Expo Mountain West
Everyone knows that the end of summer is the best time for four-wheeling. It’s a little cooler, fewer folks are exploring the woods, and there are many sweet events like Overland Expo Mountain West, running August 26-28, to help you enjoy it. If you’ve got the time on those days, you’d better head out to The Ranch in Loveland, CO, for good company, better seminars, and the best off-road courses to practice on.
