Competition Corner: May 2022 Auto Events
Well, we finally made it. After a long, trying winter, we’re back to the part of our journey around the sun when we can enjoy our vehicles the right way. There’s a lot going on – which is great – but that does make it hard to decide which events you need to check out. Good thing you’ve found Competition Corner, where we make it easy for you to dial in on the automotive extravaganzas you need to make a part of your life.
WoO: Dairyland Showdown
World of Outlaws is kicking off the month with mass confusion. Mostly because of the fact that the Mississippi Thunder Speedway is located in Fountain City, Wisconsin. Either way, the Dairyland Showdown is nothing you want to miss. Running, May 5-7, this three-day clay-slinging tire shredder will have the best-of-the-best battling it out for a whopping $30,000. You know that’s the kind of action you need, so tell the boss to shove it and pack your bags.
17th Annual NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing
Picture it: 500 drag cars battling it out for glory. Everything from regular streetcars to full-on pro mods going at it full-bore down the quarter-mile. Are there are other ways to spend your time off? Sure. Are any of them as fun as the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing? No. Clear your calendar May 12-15 — we’re heading to St. Louis.

Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals
Carlisle Events are pretty much what keeps us northeasterners from tearing each other apart after the long, dark winters. Only problem is that most of what’s on the schedule celebrates vintage muscle. Well, this is the time of year for people with different likings to rejoice. The Import and Performance Nationals runs May 13-14 and is the place to be for parts, inspiration, and just a good time for those who love what comes from overseas. Even muscle nuts will probably have the time of their lives here.
Virginia NHRA Nationals
The NHRA has already been back at it for some time. In fact, the Virginia Nationals is already the seventh event on the 2022 schedule. Yeah, you’ve been missing out on that much pavement-cracking action! Let’s change things by getting you ready May 13-15. Smell the fumes pumping and hear the engines roaring out of Richmond for the first time since 2019. Find everything you need to know here.
GoodGuys: 16th BASF Nashville Nationals
Goodguys events need little to no introduction. They’re legendary shows with all kinds of classics, killer company, corals, and more. You already know all about it, so consider this a reminder that the Nashville Nationals are coming in hot May 13-15.

Mecum Indy
Ready for another event that needs little introduction? Mecum Indy is about to pop off this month. This 9-day marathon of collector car auctions will see more than 3,000 vehicles cross the block May 13-21. If you’re ready to drool over your next dream car or just want to watch something on television that isn’t terrible, you already know where to turn your attention.
SVRA
SVRA is all about reliving the glory days, but it’s no easy stroll down memory lane. It’s a high-octane thrill session in which classic cars are pushed to the limit. Thankfully, there are two SVRA events going down this month.
First is the Road America Speed Tour, running May 19-22, where drivers take on the 4.05-mile track known for its grueling nature. Then, May 27-30, the Memorial Day Classic puts drivers on the equally challenging 1.5-mile course at Lime Rock Park. What are you waiting for? It’s time to book the trips.

Overland Expo West
If you’re serious about overlanding and are ready to take your skills to the next level, Overland Expo West is where you need to be. Simply put, no other event is on the same scale when it comes to this wing of the industry. 24 Hours of Lemons – Yokohama Days of Thunderhill
This May is absolutely packed with killer events, and we’re wrapping up on an appropriate note. 24-Hours of Lemons is the kind of party we all need more of as the cost of living goes up and our funds for racing go down. This time the nut jobs are taking on Willows, California, May 28-29 for Yokohama’s Days of Thunderhill. You know you’ve always wanted to see what these events are all about, and nothing’s standing in your way now. Grab a cheap car, some cool friends and get going!
