Retrax Bed Covers for 2020 Mid-Size Trucks

Two seemingly opposite statements can describe the truck market over the last decade:

It’s gotten bigger.

It’s gotten smaller.

Looking at the full-size market, gone are the days of modest front ends slipping seamlessly through 7’ garage doors. Now, it’s a race to fit the biggest, boldest grille and headlight combination on the front of your truck.

But in the same respect, as half-tons grow bigger, more “mid-size” trucks have hit the market to enter that vacated smaller space. Here in the States, we now have SIX mid-size options. (I’m not ready to count you, Gladiator). What a time to be alive!

Meet Retrax

One company that does a great job servicing the mid-size truck market is Retrax—makers of retractable truck bed covers for nearly 25 years.

Typically, when you hear ‘tonneau’ or ‘cover,’ you picture the garden-variety soft rolling or hard folding type. And for basic truck owners, those may do the job just fine. But if you’re looking for more durability, security, and ease of use, it’s tough to beat what’s going on over at Retrax.

The “ONE” and “PRO” series of covers retract straight back into a small container below the cab window and the tonneau itself. This one-piece cover design provides superior impact resistance, and will operate smoothly whether you’re hauling icepicks up Mt. Everest or sand down to the bottom of Death Valley. And the sliding design offers quite possibly the lowest profile cover on the market today.

So, let’s take a peek at some of the newest mid-size pickups for 2020 we think would look great with a Retrax retractable bed cover.

CHEVROLET COLORADO

While the Silverado gets most of the payload and towing praise within the Chevy truck lineup, the Colorado—and its GMC Canyon brother—continue to punch above their weight class. Featuring a maximum towing capacity topping out at 7,700 lbs. and a maximum payload of 1,569 lbs., the Colorado holds its own when compared to some half-ton trucks. All this while keeping a compact, daily driver-friendly size and fuel economy.

Perhaps what we like best are the six available trim levels—starting with the base Colorado and topping out at the off-road behemoth ZR2 AEV Bison. For those of you seeking versatility and sturdiness, the all-aluminum RETRAXPRO MX keeps pace with anything you’ll throw at or in your Colorado—available for the 5’2” and 6’2” bed sizes.

FORD RANGER

POWERTRAXPRO MX truck bed coverAfter years of rumor and speculation, 2019 marked the return of the hallowed blue-oval Ranger nameplate.

Fed up with being elbowed out of the segment it helped pioneer, Ford gave us a mid-size contender with a stout new powertrain last year. That engine remains largely unchanged for 2020, but its smooth 10-speed automatic and best-in-class 310 lb-ft of torque certainly give some Tacoma and even F-150 shoppers something to take a closer look at.

The Lariat trim line trickles down from its big brother and features premium niceties like dual instrumental panel displays, leather, and a B&O audio system. To match, we think the key fob-activated POWERTRAXPRO MX, and its powered opening/closing and matte finish makes a perfect complement.

HONDA RIDGELINE

Ditching the previous high-sided styling of its first iteration, the second-gen Ridgeline has proudly become the truck of choice for car lovers. Its unibody car-like ride is a great choice for those folks who want a bit more room for hauling, but aren’t willing to give up a smooth, mild-mannered road presence to get it.

As you’d expect from Honda, the Ridgeline is packed with quirky and innovative tech and design—like its out-swinging tailgate and bed-outfitted audio system. But all that tech doesn’t prevent the need for additional security, and the RetraxONE MX with its sleek, streamlined appearance, keeps all that tech out of sight until the tailgate party starts.

TOYOTA TACOMA

Undoubtedly still the king of the mid-size trucks, the Tacoma hasn’t needed to change a lot in the past fifteen years. Sure, it was retooled for 2016, but the Taco still has much of the same DNA that took it to the top of the mountain in the first place.

Like the Colorado, you can build your Tacoma to fit your exact needs—with 32 different configurations in all. Of course, we’re biggest fans of the ever popular—and resale value king—TRD Pro.

These rigs are great foundations to start your off-road or overland build, so we recommend the RetraxONE XR cover. Its integrated Trax Rail System allows most t-slot racking systems from Yakima, Thule, and Rhino Rack to be mounted right over your cover!  So now there’s no excuse to not get that rooftop tent you’ve had your eye on.
