Best Off-Road Trails in the Tri-State Area
It’s that time of year, again — the rivers are running, the trees are in full bloom, and the trails are calling. For those of you who live in the northeast (specifically the PA, NJ & NY tri-state area), this is more than just welcome news; it’s a literal breath of fresh air. Slogging through nearly six months of winter weather doesn’t just wear on your vehicle, it does something to your soul.
Thankfully, the brief respite of summer has arrived, and with so many wicked off-roading opportunities in these three great states, you’re sure to have a jam-packed couple months of dirt-flinging fun.
Known for its beautiful landscapes, challenging rocky woods, and stunning escarpments, the tri-state offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a fun family ATV ride or a demanding and technical route that lets you try out your brand-new winch, you won’t be disappointed. Check out some of the area’s best off-road trails below.

Pennsylvania
The Keystone State offers a wide variety of off-road trails with some very lenient regulations throughout the state, making it a 4×4 explorer’s dream.
Rock Run Recreation Trail

Not too far from Pittsburgh, PA, you’ll find an off-roader’s paradise known as Rock Run Recreation Trail. With over 140 miles of trails ranging from easy to expert, along with friendly staff and great facilities, this is a busy spot for locals and tourists alike.
If you’re concerned about sharing the trails, try to plan your trip for early to mid-week. If, however, you’re looking to connect with other trail-trekking enthusiasts, then Rock Run really is the ideal venue. There are plenty of organized events on the calendar every year, including the popular ATV Summer Blast in August and Rally at the Rock in September. The park also truly marks itself as a ‘destination,’ offering 16 electrified campsites and over 350 primitive sites spread throughout 6 campgrounds, allowing you to easily make a long weekend out of things.
Of course, in order to partake in the Shangri-La of 4×4 venues, you’ve got to pay to play, so be sure to check out rates online.
Rausch Creek Off-Road Park

Moving over to the eastern part of the state, where you’ll need to swap that Steelers jersey for Eagles gear, you’ll find the large-and-in-charge Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, a favorite spot for Jeep, truck, and SUV trail-seekers.
With over 3,000 acres to explore, you can go from beginner to expert in a single day. And, unlike many other off-road venues in this region of the country, Rausch Creek is open year-round. In fact, it’s only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day – so you could kick off your new year with a trail ride, if your rig can make it through whatever unpredictable conditions you might come across…
For safety reasons, there’s a two-vehicle minimum to ride the Rausch Creek trails. However, if you’re a single vehicle and need a buddy, the park offers plenty of programs in which you can be paired up with another enthusiast. A yearly membership fee of $60 is required, but it includes primitive camping and unlimited riding, which is a total steal, considering the size of the park.
New Jersey
Given its smaller size, NJ features fewer off-road options than some other states, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in variety. Be warned, however, that state and local regulations are stricter here, so straying off the designated trails could lead to a hefty fine.
Pine Barrens, Wharton State Park

Pine Barrens is the most well-known and popular spot to run your vehicle off-road in New Jersey. Also known as the Pinelands, this enormous 1.1-million-acre reserve covers a whopping 22% of the state’s total land area. More impressive, it serves up more than 500 miles of unpaved, muddy, and precarious roads that will really let you make the most of your fresh, beefy treads.
Heads up: Pine Barrens is heavily patrolled and strictly monitored in order to prevent degradation of the state’s natural resource, so don’t even think about taking your 4×4 off the trails. Also, your ride must be street legal — meaning it has to be licensed and registered, and you have to keep your speed under 20 mph. That doesn’t diminish the opportunity for a good time though, and if you like mud, this is your pick to click. These trails get super mucky after some rain.
Island Beach State Park

For a total about-face, there’s the pristine and picturesque Island Beach State Park. Pristine and picturesque aren’t always adjectives associated with off-roading, but if you’re looking for a welcome change of scenery and a different set of challenges, grab a permit and take your 4-wheel drive vehicle to the beach for a few days.
Here’s the caveat: you have to be going on a fishing excursion. But that doesn’t sound so bad, right?
The park issues 3-day permits that allow you to drive on the beach in search of a utopian fishing hole. And even if you don’t find one, with close to 10 miles of white-sand beaches and crisp Atlantic air, any sand-seekers should leave feeling satisfied.
Be sure to check the tides before you head out, and don’t forget to load up everything on the park’s must-have checklist for beach-driving permit holders. The checklist, which obviously includes fishing equipment and other necessary items, is not a recommendation; all off-road vehicles are required to have the listed items on them.
New York
It’s easy to reduce this state to its urban center point, but the Empire State lays claim to a surprisingly vast amount of natural landscape. Beautiful escarpments, awe-inspiring gorges, wooded scenery, open and inviting grasslands, and challenging trails welcome drivers of all skill levels and off-road appetites.
Northeast Off-Road Adventures

Located on 75 acres of perfectly picturesque mountaintop, the all-inclusive Northeast Off-Road Adventures facility provides 4WD and overland training, adventure programs, driving tours, and team outings for individuals and groups. The company’s venues include the mountain-top facility in Ellenville, NY, and the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort. As an added bonus, you can also take advantage of the adaptive SOAR program, which is specifically catered to guests with disabilities.
NORA will give you the confidence to go from beginner to expert off-roader in no time. Learn the basics of traversing 68 acres of rugged trails to successful navigation of steep inclines and boulder picking. Open year-round, the facility offers plenty of group outings, 4WD expos, and even private bookings for birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations.
Mettowee Off-Road Extreme Park

Closing in on the New Hampshire border, Mettowee Off-Road Extreme Park might be one of the most ideal all-inclusive getaways in the state. You can pretty much run whatever you’ve got in this park, from ATVs, UTVs, MCs, dirt bikes, Jeeps, trucks, and SUVs to dune buggies, sand rails, and even your beloved 2-stroke at certain times of year. This 120-acre park loves every ride equally.
Mettowee boasts a wide variety of terrain and hosts fun mud bog and racing events, all at a reasonable admission price. The only drawbacks? There aren’t any camping facilities, and the park is only open on weekends. You can book it on weekdays for groups of 10 or more, though, and as the park is a relative newcomer to the off-road community, we expect the hours will likely change as popularity increases.
